What's New....

Just finishing up Shasta's Album "The Outsider". This album has turned out beautifully. Tim Calhoun (gtrs, band leader), Shane Keister (keys), Jim Kirby (keys), David Santos (bass), Larry Crew (bass), William Ellis (drums) Dave Mackormack (lap steel) and Joe First (accordian). Check out "San Agustin" on the Studio page. I'm really proud of the way this track turned out. It shows the varied influences that make up Shasta's music. Working with Shasta has been on of the very most rewarding experiences.

For the last 2 1/2 years Whitehorse has been working with WNYC Radio (New York’s premier progressive radio station and NPR Flagship) to design and build a state of the art, robotic, Hi-Def Television production facility for their new Greenspace facilities at 160 Varick St, here in New York. The system is the realization of a unique vision of the future of multi-camera tele-production for the 21st century. This highly automated, broadcast facility can be operated by a single person as opposed the large number of individuals required to operate the video system in a traditional facility. (Oh lord, more union guys out of work…)We (Whitehorse) are now actually doing all the production for events at the space and hope to continue doing so for the for seeable future.

Herringbone is joining with The Good Cup, 2181 Hillsboro Rd., Franklin, Tn to bring a very special series of Concerts with some of the finest musicians and songwriters around. These shows will be very up close and personal, The Good Cup only holds 55 people, so come early for a good seat. It's a wonderful opportunity to spend an hour with some legendary writers as well as some very experienced and talented "up and coming" writers. They will be Saturdays from 6pm until 8:30pm and will cost $10 at the door. Unlike the normal "Writer's Nights" these will not be "in the round", and will not feature beginner writers.

Here is the line-up so far:

April 7th - Lidia Salnikova - The wonderful Russian singer/keyboardist from the band Beiring Strait.
Also Eric Haines - one of the very best up and coming singer/songwriters in town.

4-8-07 The inaugural evening of The Coffee Shop Concert Series, presented by HerringboneRecords.com and The Good Cup (591-2326, 2181 Hillsboro Rd.), went off beautifully. Headlined by the lovely Lydia Salnikova, the evening began with the powerful songwriting of Eric Haines.

Eric, while not as lovely as Lydia, is one of Nashville’s finest up and coming songwriters. He recently finished a 7 song Ep at the Herringbone Studio (482-3319). HerringboneRecords.com\ What’s New) As a result, Eric is being avidly considered by a number of major Publishers to a Writing Deal.

Lydia Salnikova, sang and played a beautiful hour long set to an enraptured audience, aided on Vocals and Guitar, by Wayland Patton. Surrounded by golden light and numerous candles, it was like sitting in Lydia’s living room, being treated to a private concert of her rich contralto, some of the audience being only about 5 feet from her.

The upcoming headliners include Don Henry, The Legendary Don Wayne and Jimmy Payne, Paul Craft and Boomer Kesselman.

The Coffee Shop Concert Series is destined to be the most intimate and warm music venues in the Nashville/Franklin area. All shows start at 6pm and finish at 8:30 pm, for a wonderful early evening experience. That’s a lot of great music for only $10 at the door, with plenty of easy parking. The Good Cup also serves a great assortment of Coffees, Imported and Domestic beers, soft drinks and sandwiches.
The Good Cup – 591-2326 2181 Hillsboro Rd., just north of Franklin

April 14th - Don Henry - The one and only. A Grammy Award winning writer of rare wit and wisdom.
Also Danny Salazar- a very special singer and writer of varied Latin styles.

4-15- Grammy Award Winner Don Henry (http://www.donhenry.com/) is the epitome of warmth, wit and wisdom. Having him with us at The Good Cup for an intimate hour long show creates a memory not to be forgotton. His smiling face looking out over his excellent guitar playing makes the listener feel like we're being invited into Don's world and being included in his own private joke. Forget about his cuts by Ray Charles, Patti Page and Conway ,Gene Watson, John Conlee and B.J. Thomas,Blake Shelton, Lonestar and Kathy Mattea, when you see Don play live, you truely see the man and his heart.

As Don Henry said, "I've never said this before, but I don't even want to play, I just want to sit and listen to Danny Salazar." Danny, born in Texas and raised in San Antonio and Mexico, is one of the truely fine up and coming singer/songwriters in any genre.although almost all of his music is original, he draws from many of the Mexican and South american musical styles. His presence on stage is so warm and self depricatingthat it was 1/2 way thru his set before it dawned on me that all his lyrics were in Spanish. Music being the Universal language, it didn't seem that anyone else had noticed either.

All in all, another wonderful nite at The Good Cup.

April 21st- The Legendary Don Wayne and Jimmy Payne. Don, the writer of the classic “Saginaw Michigan” and “Country Bumpkin”. Jimmy, writer of “Woman,Woman” and “My Eyes can only See as Far as You”.
Also C. J. Watson and friends. C. J. is a staple of the songwriting scene and one of our finest singers and guitarists.

4-22 Don Wayne and Jimmy Payne along with Danny Dill and Dick Feller have been playing around Nashville and the US as "The Three Chord Heroes". They are also two of the truely fine Gentlemen in Country Music. Don, having major hits by Lefty Frizell and Cal Smith, such as "Saginaw, Michigan" , "Country Bumpkin" and "She talked a lot about Texas", was also instrumental in going to Wash. DC and getting Congress to raise the Writer's Royalties. His gentelmanly manners belies a quick and devistating wit.

Jimmy , whose biggest hit was "Woman, Woman" by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, also had a big hit by Charlie Pride,"My Eyes Can Only See as Far as You".Jimmy also had albums out under his own name and has toured extensively in Great Britian and Europe as well as here in the States.

Don and Jimmy are not only two of my favorite writers and performers, they are two of my favorite people.

April 28th - Paul Craft - writer of “Brother Jukebox”"Dropkick Me Jesus through the Goal Posts of Life".
Also Allison Kerr - w/ Bill Heber -trombone

4-29 Another great evening of music. Allison Kerr began the evening with her own brand of Jazzy songs and wonderful singing. Her clear strong voice was accompanied by the very tastful playing of Slide Trombonist, Bill Haber. Her song

May 5th - Ray Sisk a great writer, has cuts with Warren Haines as well as by Happy Traum. Also Richard Moore

May 12th - Boomer Kesselmann

We just finished a 7 song project for a local up-and-coming writer, Eric Haines. Eric is a very fine singer/songwriter whose main focus is to be a Writer more that an Artist. We recently took his songs to a major publishing house and got a great and enthusiastic response. Hopefully that translates to great things for him and his career. Once again it is proved to me in real life situations, that the Demo can absolutely make a huge difference in how the writer is viewed and treated by Labels, Publishing co.s, and Artists. The truth is that he had taken all the songs around before and recieved the "Your songs are good, bring me your next batch in about 3 months..." response. The new versions, with my musicians playing, had the A & R lady literally jumping out of her chair. I've never seen that before. Hopefully we'll all be hearing these songs on the Radio. We're keeping our fingers crossed.

Well, we finally seem to be getting around to finishing up some of the projects that have been sitting on the back burner for far too long.

Richard Moore wants to re-sing and re-mix his album "The Shine of Your Eyes". It's kind of unbelievable that we cut that album to Adats using basically only (2) Groove Tube Model 1 mics and (2) T L Audio dual Tube Compressor/ Mic Pre's, and mixed it thru (3) Promix 01's. Mark Douthit and Pat Bergeson played some truely killer tracks for us. Still love them after all these years. Just finished the re-mix on Backward Duck Walk. Hell yeah, the Harrison console makes a difference. Looking forward to the rest of the project, I'd kind of forgotten how great these tracks really are. Dave Roe's bass playing and persona is felt thruout the album, also he's the one who brought us drummer Stan Smith.

Speaking of Roe. I'm finally getting a chance to finish the mix of the Slap Bass DVD. Again, a great project. Dave was Johnny Cash's Bass player from '92 untill the end of his giging life. (Check out Dave's bio for the story of how Dave got the gig.) (Dave recently finished a 2 year stint with Dwight Yoakam.) There's a lot of useable info as well as insight and licks that makes Dave well known as one of the great Hillbilly Slap bassists anywhere. ( remember, he also played 5 string elec. bass on Richard Moore's album)

I'm also planning on finally doing the re-mix of the Legendary Airs album. One evening I asked Don Wayne if his tracks were OK with him, did he like the way we produced and the musicians played. (His songs were cut by the likes of Lefty Frazell and Cal Smith, Country Music giants.) He turned to me and said "These are the best versions of these songs I've ever heard." I just about fell out of the chair. This is a wonderful project and was recorded for all the right reasons. It truely deserves to see the light of day.

On a more semi-personal note, we have a new studio dog. Mr. Bone, aka The Bone Man, is gone but not forgotten. He is very special. One of the funniest, brightest, most concientous guys I've ever known. After 15 mos., it was time to get a new pooch. At first, I was not going to get another Border Collie, but after researching other Breeds, the facts that BC's are extreemly bright (smarter than lots of guys I've known) are not too big, and are not frivolous Barkers, (they look into the eyes of the herd and intimidate them into going where they should), made the choice obvious. I found Franklin on the East Tn. Border Collie website. There is also a West Tn BC Rescue(adopt@tnbordercollierescue.com). Both sets of folks are great to work with, and I highly recomend them. Sally Anne Reinhart did a great job getting him used to being around both people and critters. He had been tied up and left outside. I could tell by the pics that he was going to be a real good one. Sally and the ETBC Rescue made sure he had all his shots, was neutered and microchipped (in case he is ever lost or stolen) as well as being ready to go to a home. (The screening process of the Adoptor(s) is fairly rigorous as well. They do not want to place a dog in the wrong home.) From the first moment Franklin and I met, he acted like he'd been with me all his life. He drove home with me thru an hellacious storm, like it was nothing and didn't even whimper that night. No separation anxiety what-so-ever. Which was Great. He loves the Studio. When people come to the studio, he runs to greet them and say Hi! After a couple minutes, he goes under the console and gets to what seems to be a dogs main job in life, Napping. Here's a pic of him at Christmas time '06.
